	What part of the world does UNIATZ come from.  

I can't find it with a "z", but spelling of names tends to be erratic anyway. This is from the Wikipedia:
 
'The term has been used by the Holy See (e.g., in the Ex Quo of Pope Benedict XIV)[4]. The Catholic Encyclopedia (1909) consistently used the term "Uniat" to refer to Eastern Catholics, stating: "The Uniat Church is therefore really synonymous with Eastern Churches united to Rome, and Uniats is synonymous with Eastern Christians united with Rome." '

	 I know he was from New York but where did his descendants come from? 

Dey came from wherever dere ma was when Hoppy met her.  :-) 
 
Perhaps Charteris just wanted something that hinted that Hoppy's ancestors were vaguely Eastern European or Balkan; nothing too specific, so as not to offend anyone with an obviously ethnic joke.
