Ian, the posting re a new collection of the Saint comic strips kindled a
recollection of a similar project I attempted several decades ago, via a
comic entrepreneur named Ken Pierce. LC's reply to our query letter stated
that he would be pleased with such a collection but that he felt he had no
say in the matter, that it was up to the Herald Tribune (which was still in
operation and was in control of the discontinued strip.) We got boggled down
at the Her-Trib syndicate and gave up the project. But the thing of note was
that LC said he much preferred the art of John Spranger to that of Mike Roy.
He also suggested we begin with the strip adventure that gave birth to "The
Saint in Pursuit."
I would never have gone against his wishes, but I disagreed with his choice
of artists. Roy's work ran hot and cold, but when he was at his best during
the strips early years, with Jack Davis (I believe) doing the inking, he had
a style that was not only unique but seemed a perfect fit for Charteris'
storylines. The characters leapt off the page. Spranger was fine, but fairly
conventional. And I'll never forgive him for giving Templar a rather Satanic
moustache and van dyke beard (or could that have been LC's idea?).
