I can't help wondering, who are the biggest idiots? Viewers, who rarely stay away in enormous droves from recycled/cloned second-rate dumbed-down rubbish. Advertisers, who seem happy to buy space in the ad-breaks for recycled (etc) TV rubbish and the cinema ads which go with their big-screen equivalents. Writers, who at least have the justification of avoiding biting the hand that feeds and are happy to deliver what the studios most demand. Senior studio folk, who sit on top of gigabuck empires, so are clearly justified in regarding themselves as Masters of their particular Universe, and therefore must be the ultimate arbiters of what is and is not good. (Shades of senior bankers?) I suppose I should take more notice of a Sam Goldwyn quote I particularly like: "Nobody ever went broke under-estimating the taste of the public." Change "taste" for "sensibilities", "intelligence", "discrimination", etc, to suit one's whim.
